The vote is in, and Vodafone AirTouch has won the most mobile phone subscribers in the world at 39.1 million. Formed when the UK's Vodafone Group bought US wireless provider AirTouch Communications in 1999, Vodafone AirTouch operates wireless networks offering voice, messaging, paging, and data services. Vodafone AirTouch is the #1 mobile phone operator in the UK, with more than 8.7 million subscribers, and Verizon Wireless, the company's joint venture with Bell Atlantic, is #1 in the US, with 16 million. Vodafone AirTouch also holds stakes in wireless carriers in 22 other countries. It will expand by integrating the wireless businesses of 99%-owned Mannesmann, operator of Germany's #1 wireless carrier.
