Former state monopoly Telecom Italia isn't just for Italians anymore. It provides a wide range of telecommunications services in Italy and has interests in some 100 businesses in more than 30 other countries, mainly in Europe and Latin America. At home Telecom Italia is still on top: The company is Italy's #1 fixed-line operator, #1 wireless provider (through 60%-owned Telecom Italia Mobile), and #1 ISP (Tin.it). Telecom Italia also provides satellite communications and manufactures telecom equipment. Through its Tecnost subsidiary, former rival Olivetti owns 55% of Telecom Italia.

Telecom Italia Mobile

CA 1999 / 1999 revenue: 7,5 MM$ (+3,8%)
Bénéfices 1999 / 1999 income: 1,6 MM$ (+1,5%)

From the Palatine Hill to the Bridge of Sighs, Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) caters to the voracious Italian appetite for wireless chat. TIM is the leading wireless telecommunications carrier in Europe, with more than 16 million subscribers in Italy, placing it ahead of #2 Italian mobile phone company Omnitel Pronto Italia. The carrier uses the European digital standard, GSM (global system for mobile communications), as well as an analog network. TIM offers text-messaging on GSM handsets and a popular prepaid card program. The company also has stakes in cellular operations in Asia, South America, and other European countries. TIM is 60%-owned by Telecom Italia, which is controlled by Olivetti.
