DescriptionCA 1999 / 1999 revenue: 80,4 MM$ (+12,3%) Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) has executed an AT&T-style breakup into two local carriers and a long-distance provider -- but unlike Ma Bell's gang, this family is sticking together. The world's #1 telecommunications firm, NTT is a holding company for regional local phone companies NTT East and NTT West, which enjoy de facto monopolies in their markets, and long-distance carrier NTT Communications, which faces growing competition. NTT also operates a leading ISP and owns 67% of Japan's dominant cellular carrier, NTT Mobile Communications Network (DoCoMo). The firm also has made international investments throughout the Pacific Rim and the US. Holding company NTT remains 53%-owned by the state.
Regarding worldwide alliances, the Nippon giant stays relatively alone and doesn't know where to go. Indeed, NTT doesn't want to create its own worldwide allicance against Golbal One or Concert as it doesn't want to deteriorate its relationships with the other telecom giants. However, NTT also believes it's too early to join an alliance. In the meantime, the Nippon carrier deals with everybody:
