General Electric (GE) has electrified the marketplace with its ability to be #1 or #2 in a range of industries, from broadcasting to power plant parts manufacturing. The diversified company produces aircraft engines, locomotives and other transportation equipment, appliances (kitchen and laundry equipment), lighting, electric distribution and control equipment, generators and turbines, nuclear reactors, medical imaging equipment, and plastics. Its financial arm, GE Capital Services, accounts for half of sales and is one of the largest financial services companies in the US. Other operations include the NBC television network. For the last three years, GE has been averaging more than 100 acquisitions a year.

NBC, faisant partie de General Electrics, s'est associé à Microsoft pour créer le site Web d'actualité MSNBC. De plus, les deux compagnies comptent aller plus loin en proposant de l'audio et de la vidéo orientés finances pour leurs abonnés.

Mais on peut s'interroger sur l'attitude de General Electrics très impliqué dans les appareils grands public, face à Microsoft, qui a très envie de percer sur ce marché. Va-t-il voir dans le géant de Redmond un concurrent désirant imposer son joug sur le marché ou un allié potentiel?

NBC, which is owned by General Electrics created with Microsoft the news Web site MSNBC. Those two companies want to go further in providing some subscribtion-based, financial-oriented audio and video.

But one can wonder about the attitude of General Electrics which produces TV sets, in face of Microsoft which has some aggresive views on this market. Will GE consider Redmond's giant as a competitor which wants to install its dictatorship over this market or a potential ally?

  • American Sky Broadcasting (ASkyB) détient 1 MM$ d'actions sans droit de vote et va fournir des satellites. ASkyB est détenu à 80% par News Corp. - la compagnie de Ruppert Murdoch - et à 20% par WorldCom.
