Fast on its feet, Sprint trails only AT&T and WorldCom in the race for US long-distance markets. The field will shrink, however, when Sprint is acquired by WorldCom. Sprint is also the #2 non-Baby Bell local-service phone company (after GTE), with more than 8 million lines in 18 US states. Sprint's FON Group handles these businesses, as well as telecom equipment distribution, directory publishing, and Sprint's interests in EarthLink (Internet access) and Call-Net (telecommunications in Canada). It also offers Sprint ION (Integrated On-Demand Network), a bundled telecom services package. Sprint's PCS Group provides digital wireless PCS service throughout the US. The two groups trade through separate tracking stocks.

Sprinting to take the lead in the wireless race, Sprint PCS Group (a Sprint unit with its own tracking stock) runs an all-digital wireless network that serves about 6.5 million subscribers. The company has PCS licenses covering all 50 US states (including some 360 metro areas), Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Its network uses code division multiple access (CDMA) technology. Independent regional affiliates such as Airgate PCS and Alamosa PCS extend the reach of the Sprint PCS brand, adding nearly 500,000 subscribers. The Sprint PCS Wireless Web service offers wireless Internet access and content through partners such as America Online, EarthLink, and eBay.

  • Aux Etats-Unis,
    • Sprint est le troisième plus gros opérateur longues distances, derrière AT&T et WorldCom. Il est cependant sur le point de se faire racheter par ce dernier,
    • il est également présent sur le marché du cellulaire par le biais de sa filiale Sprint PCS, avec 6,5 millions d'abonnés. A noter que le câblo-opérateur Comcast détient également des parts dans Sprint PCS,
    • l'opérateur est également un opérateur local dans 19 états et possède 7 millions d'abonnés. Il est un des l'opérateurs locaux principal dans 15 états (Floride, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, Caroline du Nord, Ohio, Pennsylvanie, Caroline du Sud, Tennessee, Texas, Virginie, état de Washington).
  • Sur le plan international, Sprint faisait partie de Global One, une joint-venture créée par France Télécom et Deutsche Telekom. Cette alliance a cependant essuyé pertes sur pertes depuis sa création. France Télécom a fini par racheter Global One à ses deux partenaires.
  • In the United States,
    • Sprint is the third largest long distance carrier, after AT&T et WorldCom. It is however about to be purchased by WorldCom,
    • it is also present on the cellular market through its subsidiary Sprint PCS, with 6.5 million subscribers. Cable operator Comcast also holds some shares in Sprint PCS,
    • the carrier is a local operator in 19 states and has 7 million subscribers. It is one of the Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers in 15 states (Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington).
  • On the international market, Sprint belonged to the Global One alliance, the international joint-venture created with France Télécom and Deutsche Teleko. This alliances has however always suffered some heavy losses since its creation. France Télécom has since purchased the shares of its partners to fully control Global One.
