With more than 22 million subscribers, America
Online (AOL) is the world's #1 provider of online
services. Its CompuServe Interactive Services subsidiary
lengthens its lead with more than 2.5 million additional
subscribers. AOL's agreement to buy entertainment giant
Time Warner will make the company #1 in all things media.
The firm also owns the Netscape Netcenter portal and
Netscape Communicator software (including the Netscape
Navigator browser), and has entered into a joint venture
with Sun Microsystems (dubbed the Sun-Netscape Alliance)
to develop e-commerce software. AOL bolsters its Web
presence through its AOL Instant Messenger, AOL.com
portal, Digital City, and AOL MovieFone properties.

- en France, Vivendi a
fusionné le service d'accès Internet Havas
Online (détenu par sa filiale Havas) avec AOL
France. Au final, Cégétel distribue les
services d'accès Internet AOL (grand public) et
Compuserve (professionnels),
- America Online compte racheter Time
Warner.

worldwide), AOL exchanged its network with
Compuserve customer base. America Online thus
focus on its core ISP business with both AOL and
Compuserve customers, and WorldCom holds the
networks of both ISPs,
- AOL purchased Netscape. This merger allows it
the grab Netcenter portal, as well as famous
Navigator Web browser,
- the ISP struck several partnerships with
telcos to provide high-speed Internet services:
- with SBC
in the Southwestern states, in Illinois,
Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin,
- with Bell
Atlantic in Maine and
Virginia,
- with GTE,
in the places where the carrier provides
ADSL services (parts of Washington,
Oregon, Calofirnia, Florida, Hawaii and
11 other states).
